Message From Our Chairperson

You’ve probably heard the statistic that “10,000 Americans are retiring every day” and wondered if your community has missed out on attracting them.  You’ve come to the right place – welcome to the American Association of Retirement Communities, where retiree attraction (planning, marketing, programming, and more!) has been our focus for over two decades.

On the topic of focus, hindsight may be 20/20, but the AARC can help with your “2020 vision.”  That “10,000 retirees” stat is a bit unclear, but take a look at this: there are actually more people turning 60 every day in 2020 (nearly 12,000 a day!) than ever, as the peak of the “Baby Boom” (and, in fact, the largest 5-year period of American births in history) was 1957-1961.  Those 23 million 59-to-63 year olds are considering their housing options – how will they see their way to you?

With apologies for last paragraph’s vision-related wordplay (it is 2020 – and stats can be too dry for a Welcome note), the functions of the AARC are to be a shared resource for best practices, education, research and networking.  Baby Boomers are changing the concept of retirement, and AARC members have been on the forefront of this evolving market.  Learn with – and from – these industry leaders through our webinars, studies and our popular annual conference in the Fall.  We hope that you take full advantage of what the AARC has to offer, and that you join us!

Hoping to see you in 20/20 (sorry, couldn’t resist…),

Bill Houghton, Chair

2020 Annual Conference

Recently, your AARC Board made the unfortunate but inevitable decision to postpone the 2020 Annual Conference to next year – we are planning to host that event in Myrtle Beach November 3rd – 5th, 2021.  Much as we all hope that things will be closer to normal by this November, we needed to act in order to avoid significant cancellation fees – and as a small non-profit organization with a tightly managed  budget, we could not afford to absorb such fees.  We appreciate the host hotel’s flexibility in allowing us to reschedule without penalty, and we’ll look forward to all getting together in 2021.

Our Annual Conference is a crucial function of the organization, but The American Association of Retirement Communities is more than just a conference.  Tap into our best practices, deepen your network, and be most effective at leading your responsibilities – the AARC  is here to help.  In the absence of an annual conference, your board is redoubling efforts to make up for the lost networking and learning opportunity (although we can’t promise to make up for the lost social and fun chances that the conference affods!).

Stay tuned for more, and thank you for your continued support!
