The Savannah / Hilton Head area was the first coastal region of the country to recognize the economic benefits of retiree attraction and destination communities on a grand scale. The first two national winners of the Urban Land Institutes’ prestigious “Award of Excellence” for Large Scale Planned Communities – Sea Pines on Hilton Head in 1985 and The Landings in Savannah in 1986 – are here, and have been joined by dozens of “lowcountry” communities in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head andSavannah who successfully target retirees. Plus, one of the first and best Continuing Care Retirement Communities is located on the island.
The American Association of Retirement Communities is holding their 16th annual AARC Annual Conference next week (November 13 – 15, 2013). The Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa will be the site for this year’s conference, which will be attended by scores of industry leaders from communities seeking to attract retirees. The line-up of industry leaders scheduled to present at the Conference is extremely strong, with luminaries like Dr. Jim Taylor (of the famed American Express Study of Affluence and Wealth) on the agenda. The AARC wants to share some of the resources and networking opportunities with leaders in the local real estate and destination community industry.
So, we have created an agenda on the opening day of the conference that is tailored to the local audience – and we invite you to attend. The line-up on Wednesday, November 13 is as follows:

Drew Laughlin, Mayor, Hilton Head Island, SC
